What is Design ?! décembre 29, 2008

Two Videos for my Transcription :

1:24 What is design ?

With a upper case on “D”. Actually, I like with a lower case “d”. Change it back. That’s much better ! Now let’s get started show.

1:45 “DESIGN SESSION 01”

Now let’s tell us here the term “design.”

Imagine a really popular that is person like Karim Rashid or Philippe Starck. And the all around famous : Molly Ringwald.

2:03 But nowhere design has thing at themselves as a career machine like Philippe Starck. And yet, no designer really has an answer to the question. So what do you do ?

2:15 Design is hard to describe because it’s such a bright topic.

You see design does everything you own in your active life.

You know in daily life, it is quite easy to recognize bad design.

2:30 Here are some examples :

01 Ambigious door handles

02 Programming VCR

03 Or something much more completely

3:00 Bad design is easy, it’s all around from us. But good design is difficult. Require many elements come together. Like architecture require form and function to be in perfect harmony.

3:16 But there is something behind just making beautiful object work.

And the objective is that the skin of the object look pretty.

3:25 The Wheel : A truly great design is innovative and revolutionary.

The Mouse : It’s just on a fresh idea, the great all previous rules on the subject.

The mouse wheel : But it’s so elegant and the pure simple and natural. That is it be creative ?!

3:47 “GREAT IDEA”

So how do we come up with a great idea ? Do we just read around for a flash of inspiration ?

4:07 The Whole is clearly unreliable. Because the last years Da Vinci or take LSD. You can’t in a half this flash be brilliant every day.

So how do we come up with great ideas ? Or more often.

4:24 “PROCESS”

Process : that’s the key. And that’s exactly what this video serie is going to introduce to.

There is such of elements on a design process. Every team have create innovative ideas.

To give you a test, we will submit a face of design process.

4:44 1 Needfiding

5:00 2 Brainstorming

5:20 3 Prototyping

5:44 4 Forgiving

6:11 5 Critiquing

6:41 Well that’s often now. We hope that you learnt something about design. Thanks for watching me. Look out for the next storming design session.

I’m David Ngo.

See you next time !

7:02

0:00 What is design ?
Well, that’s a big question ! OK, we’ll next start with what design is it.
Design is just about designing labour or making things look good. And there is a lot of more choose in the magical design transformation revolution in the TV maker for sure.

0:20 Design is a verb, not just a noun. It’s a process, a way on defining problems on developing solutions.
Everything man-made is designed. And design is a problem of us using a training skill and experiece to find new solution to every day’s problems large and small.

0:41 So what is design ? Well, to answer at that question, it’s probably best if we go back to the beginning.

0:50 Birth is the Industry Revolution. Brain was made in a small cottage industry with designer and makers which do everything in house.
But in a local factories, new machinery and mass production created for especially designer.

1:05 Today the UK Design Industry is worth more than eleven billion. There are over than one hundred ninety five thousand designers in brand. Many of them work in small dynamic design agencies, a bit like this guys.

1:16 What they actually do depend on their chosen design discipline.
More than a half of all UK Design Business work in communication, digital and multimedia design.

1:28 In principal, communication design is about finding the best way to explain difficult or complicated concepts.

1:33 Well, I find this example of communication design. It is the good one London underground map developed in nineteen thirty three by a graphic designer called Harry Beck.

(…)

3:29 Sometimes, design can cover this message so effectively than we recognize the product without even read the label : Coca Cola !

(…)

4:08 By asking the right question, testing new ideas and listening to use of feedback, kind design is concerning all problem in both the real and the virtual.

4:18 The Internet is a vast inventive platform that is constantly built, developed and redesigned to harmonize.

(…)

5:25 If engineering can be summarized as the relationship between not unbuilt, between two man-made things, then design is about the relationship between man-made things and people.

5:35 After all, almost everything you see touch all by being design by someone.
Design can take so many different shape and influence every aspect with what we do.

And the best design solution is simply a more effect that you ever could it treat.

In fact, I have to redesign this film before to long.

Desperate Housewives

I will speak about an serie TV : Desperate Housewives
First I will introduce you this serie, I will explain the generic, and resume the event at the beginning.
I will present you the main characters.

.

1) Serial presentation

Desperate Housewife is one of ABC’s most popular serie. It is an american comedy.
Marc Cherry is the executive producer and the creator.
It is first diffused on ABC in the USA in october 2004. In France, it appears in september 2005.
The serial is the winner of both the 2005 and 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Serie.

.

2) The story

  • Explanation of the generic

The generic shows an other version of Adam and Eve’s Story. It explains why women are so submitted.
Since Eve has ate the forbidden fruit, Adam condemns her to lead a restricting life.
For example here, she has to stay at home and grow her children. She must do the cleaning and do the shopping. And her husband deceives her with a younger woman.
After this centuries, the woman decides to react and she finished to beat her husband.

  • The story

The scene takes place on Wisteria Lane in an upscale suburban neighborhood, in the city of Fairview.
But Wisteria Lane was not as quiet and respectable as it appeared because the serie began with the suicide of Mary Alice Young. She didn’t support to mask a familial secret.
She becomes the narrator and she deciphers all details in the lives of her four best friends.
The main characters try to understand the act of Mary Alice, then they understood that they were as despareted as her friend.
Their secrets come back up. Each season is based on an police plot.

.

3) Main characters

  • Mary Alice Young is the most mysterious of the housewives because we only know pieces of her story. A loving, doting wife and mother who was generous to her family and neighbours.
  • Bree Van De is the all-too-perfect, control-freak homemaker who eventually drove her husband to divorce court.
  • Lynette Scavo. Every day, she kicked herself over her decision to give up her business career in publicity to care for her highly competitive husband and her irritating children.

  • Gabrielle Solis is an ex-model having married into money and luxury but she is faithless.
  • Edie Britt is a property agent, with whom Susan competed over the affections of plumber Mike Delfinow.

.

The success of the serie is a real Phenomenon of Society. All over the World, women feel identified as the main characters. Because they defend their cause and the serie speaks about real problem of love and of profession. They appreciate watching how these actresses play with a tuch of humoristic and ironic.

We had to writte a story in groups.

(Quantity of expressions used, originality of the story, quality of English, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation.)

My group is composed of Gabrielle, Adrien, Camille B, Sébastien Marg. and me, Camille D.

Song of TD2 story1

Last week, on my way back home, I met a man who told me his neighbour was an alien.
According to him, this alien didn’t like the pressure of his job on his planet so he decided to take a break.

He arrived in Washington during the American Independence War. It was a bit of a shock so he moved to France. Unfortunately, the French people were also fighting against their government at that time.

He found he did not like rioting because his extra-terrestrial education hasn’t prepared him to it.
He eventually settled in North Vancouver and opened his own translation center.

After 200 years on Earth, dealing with Human beings everyday, he still has trouble understanding our social standards. People there weren’t used to his blue skin and were a bit scared of his 5 legs.

On the other hand, he was successful at using his alien skills to promote his company, and he’s now multi-billionaire.
Or maybe that man was just drunk…

Transcription : The linguist novembre 1, 2008

link of song : http://thelinguist.blogs.com

Hello, this is Steve Kaufman here. We will talk about something different today.

(…) is a relative language. We are here at the linguist.blogs.com

Today I went for a haircut. My barber talks a lot. Sometimes he even stops cutting just to talk, which I find mildly annoying. On the other hand I am always entertained for 30 minutes while he cuts my hair. He does a good job and charges me 18 dollars, which is not the cheapest, but not the most expensive, haircut in Vancouver.

He told me that he came to Canada as a 16 year old, 20 years ago. He went to hair dressing school and then worked for a chain of hair salons for 5 years, in different locations in the city. He got to know the personalities of different kinds of clients. He did not like working in the heavily Chinese district of Richmond because, in his words, the customers would arrive late and expect to be served right away. If they were not served immediately, they assumed that the customer who was being served in their place had paid extra. He did not like the pressure of that situation.

He eventually opened his own shop in North Vancouver. He said that he made sure to learn all about the subjects that his clients were interested in, from fly fishing to the stock market. He knew that if customers liked him, they would come back.

After 20 years in Canada, dealing with English speaking Canadian clients, his English is just terrible. His pronunciation and use of words, structure, you name it, are all quite poor. When he talked about a leading politician and his wife, “he” and “she” were regularly used wrong. I had trouble understanding who he is talking about. People who are not used to Chinese accents must have trouble understanding him. His English is poor even by the standards of his native Hong Kong.

So what is the conclusion ? He doesn’t represent everyone but just being immersed in the language and talking the language will not necessarily improve your language. You need to want to improve. You need to have a deliberate program of improvement and you need to listen.

On the other hand, my barber has been successful at building up a customer base, and he did not seem to feel inhibited in any way by his poor English. He was a communicator, although a better talker than a listener. I have not suggested to him that he join The Linguist.
